Our former and current Artists in Residence and Elizabeth Wood presented a panel discussion on October 15 during the Artful Inquiry Symposium: Act(s) of Creation: Representational Forms of Inquiry.
Panel: Artist-in Residence / artful-in-quiry: New conversations for social and artistic exploration in a Faculty of Education
Presenters: Elizabeth Wood (on behalf of Claudia Mitchell), Jimmy Baptiste, Maria Ezcurra, Kama La Mackerel
Presenting the work of both former and current artists working at McGill’s Faculty of Education, this panel explored the concept of Artist-in-Residence, and the role that art and creativity can play in pedagogical processes. Dr. Elizabeth Wood started presenting the important part that the P. Lantz Initiative for Excellence in Education & the Arts has played in supporting and making visible the Arts at the Department of Integrated Studies in Education. Next, Jimmy Baptiste presented the Mural Project he developed as an AiR, working with student teachers from McGill’s Department of Integrated studies in Education and Montreal youth, followed by Maria Ezcurra, who talked about the art projects she collaboratively made with students and faculty to creatively transform the Education building. Finally, Kama La Mackerel talked about bridging the gap between grassroots community-engaged cultural practices with institutionalized research as it occurs in academia. The research and creative work she is developing within the context of the residency seeks to address this gap.
